New users: the typical onboarding path

Access to the Conconi Family Biodevice Foundry is managed through a structured user program designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and project success.

Step 1 for all new users: complete the new user intake form before emailing the team. This helps route your request and identify the right onboarding and training pathway.

1. Complete the new user intake form so the team can review your project and access needs.
2. Complete required training based on your intended tools and processes.
3. Book equipment or request services depending on your workflow.

Use email only after submitting the intake form, or if you are an existing user with a booking, account, or support issue.

Design service

Design service is primarily available through the rapid prototype lab for users who need help turning a part or device idea into a workable prototype design. Design work now needs to be submitted through the job request form so it can be reviewed and added to the Kanban queue.

Training

Training requirements depend on the tools and process categories you plan to use, including cleanroom processes, wet chemistry, or characterization. Some tools may be staff-operated; others may become self-serve after training. Machine shop work is fee-for-service and is performed by staff after scope and cost review.

Typical training components

• Facility orientation covering rules, expectations, and best practices
• Safety and hazard-specific training as applicable
• Tool-specific hands-on training
• Competency sign-off before independent use when self-serve is permitted

Booking and using equipment

Once you have the required training and permissions, you can book equipment when available for self-serve through NEMO Login. Machine shop jobs and design work must be submitted through the job request form so they can enter the Kanban queue for review, scope, timing, and pricing.

Two common pathways

• Self-serve: trained users book time and operate approved tools independently.
• Staff-assisted: staff perform or support critical steps, complex tools, or specialized processes.
• Machine shop: users submit an idea, drawing, or existing model through the job request form; staff review the scope, quote the job, and perform the print, cut, or machining work as a fee-for-service job.

The Conconi Family Biodevice Foundry operates with safety-first policies appropriate for cleanroom, chemistry, and fabrication environments. Users must follow facility rules, complete required training, and use approved materials and procedures.
